The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) disclosed that in 2022, over 2,000 trained telecom experts and more than 500 software engineers emigrated from Nigeria, prompting worries regarding the future of the industry.
During the Fifth Edition of the Telecom Sector Sustainability Forum (TSSF 5.0), centered on “Mitigating the Effects of Talent Exodus and its Impact on the Growth of Nigeria’s Telecommunications Industry,” Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the NCC, cautioned that the departure of skilled professionals represents a significant risk to the development and longevity of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry.
“Talent is essential for innovation and progress, and the departure of skilled workers poses a significant challenge for our industry. If this trend continues without intervention, it may threaten the industry’s growth and viability,” Maida stated in a speech presented by NCC Lagos Zonal Controller, Mr. Tunji Jimoh.
Maida pointed out that the increasing global demand for tech professionals has led many of Nigeria’s top talents to seek better opportunities overseas, resulting in a skills gap that poses a risk to the future of the industry.
To tackle this problem, the EVC called on telecom operators to implement flexible work policies, enhance pay, and cultivate an innovative culture to draw in and keep talented employees.
He also stressed the need for ongoing investment in continuous skill development and retraining programs for the workforce.
According to Maida, tech industry professionals look for workplaces where they feel appreciated, involved, and free to pursue innovative concepts.
