Cholera Outbreak Claims Nursing Mother, 9 others in Ebonyi

A cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least ten individuals, including a nursing mother who left behind a nine-month-old baby.
The Ebonyi State Health Commissioner, Moses Ekuma, confirmed the fatalities in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesman, Lucy Anyim on Thursday.
“Efforts are underway to control the outbreak,” Ekuma stated, highlighting that approximately 20 others are receiving treatment and responding well.
In response to the crisis, Governor Francis Nwifuru has authorised the procurement of essential medical supplies.
To facilitate care, three treatment centers have been established: the Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission Onuenyim, and one in Ndibokote village itself.
The outbreak has been linked to poor hygiene practices and open defecation, as many residents rely on stream water for drinking. “We urge the community to adopt better sanitation practices to prevent further spread,” Ekuma stated.
