Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, has urged global leaders to give priority to debt relief for Nigeria and other developing countries.
He expressed this appeal during the General Debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York, United States.
In a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Shettima highlighted how overwhelming debt burdens are stifling the economic development of countries in the Global South, leaving them unable to meet the needs of their citizens.
In his speech, Shettima emphasized that the overwhelming debt faced by numerous developing countries hinders their economic advancement and their capacity to address the needs of their populations.
He also urged the United Nations to strengthen multilateralism by promoting inclusivity, equality, and enhanced collaboration among member states.
He voiced worries about trade obstacles, protective measures, and increased competition, claiming they threaten worldwide investments. He called on global leaders to tackle these urgent issues.
