Edo Election: Tensions, Uncertainty amid Massive Security Presence

The die is cast as the Edo State Governorship election unfold. each candidate remains hopeful that they will emerge victorious as the results begin to come in. The tension is palpable as the fate of the state rests in the hands of the voters, who hold the power to determine the next leader to govern the state.

The election is set to be a keenly contested one, as the People’s Democratic Party candidate, Asue Ighodalo, the All  Progressives Congress flag-bearer, Monday Okpebholo, and the Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, emerge as the main contenders which many have attributed to Peter Obi’s factor.

Supporters of each candidate are out in full force, rallying behind their chosen leader. The tension and excitement in the air, with voters eagerly awaiting the opportunity to cast their ballots and make their voices heard. The stakes are high, and the outcome of this race could have far-reaching implications for the future of the state.

Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party is emerging as a surprise contender against the more established parties, APC and PDP. Despite his party’s lack of firm roots in the state, Akpata has garnered significant support from voters across Edo. Many are wondering if he will be able to pull off a victory against the odds and shake up the political landscape.

Security forces, including the military and Nigeria Police, have been deployed throughout Edo State to ensure a peaceful voting process. Concerns have been raised about potential voter intimidation, but authorities are working to maintain order and safety at polling stations.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki addressed concerns about the governorship election on Saturday, September 21.

Obaseki clarified his previous statement that the election is a “do or die affair,” explaining the high stakes for Edo State residents if the All  Progressives Congress (APC) regains control of power in the state.

There is growing concern among the stakeholders as to whether the INEC will be an unbiased umpire. Many are also worrying that the military and police presence could potentially lead to voter intimidation and manipulation of the election results. With tensions running high, the need for transparency and fairness in the electoral process has never been more crucial.
