Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi has highlighted the potential of social media to “make or mar” a country, citing global developments as evidence.
According to him, Social Media platforms are thriving in Nigeria due to guaranteed freedom of speech, enabling youths to showcase talents and earn a living. However, he stressed responsible citizenship and leadership.
The AGF delivered a keynote speech at the Abuja Social Media Summit on September 18, 2024, emphasizing the crucial role of social media in national development. He commended the event organizer, Red Carpet, for their contribution to national growth.
The Minister outlined various ways social media can drive national development, including economic growth through e-commerce, digital payments, job creation, and entrepreneurship promotion.
He added that Social Media could engender good governance, transparency, accountability, citizen participation, and public service announcements.
Fagbemi referenced successful international initiatives, such as India’s Digital India program and Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative. Nigeria’s National Orientation Agency (NOA) is also working to foster national unity and development through timely information.
The Minister acknowledged challenges like the digital divide, misinformation, and cybersecurity threats, emphasizing collaboration among governments, civil society, and private stakeholders to overcome these hurdles.
In conclusion, Fagbemi urged Nigerians to watch their words on social media, promote unity and justice, and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government in leading the country towards greater progress.
“Those who speak ill of their country to settle political differences should never have the opportunity to lead the same country at any stage.
“This government has demonstrated responsible leadership by allowing freedom of expression and will continue to do so,” he said.
He congratulated the summit convener, Earl Osaro Onaiwu, on his commitment to nation-building and community development.
