FG Outlines Strategies to Boost Opportunities for Persons With Disabilities

The Nigerian government has outlined a transformative plan to enhance educational and economic prospects for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking on Tuesday at the First Africa Regional Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education (ARCEAHED) in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, identified three key areas for development to

include: building inclusive educational infrastructure, enhancing economic inclusion, and advocating for supportive public policies.

“We must overhaul our educational infrastructure to accommodate diverse learning needs,” Sununu declared.

He reiterated the urgent need for more accessible facilities like ramps, elevators, and assistive technologies in educational institutions.

The minister who spoke beyond mere accessibility, focusing on the broader impact of education on economic empowerment. “Education for persons with disabilities is not just about overcoming societal stigma and physical barriers,” he noted. “When these obstacles are addressed, the brilliance, creativity, and resilience of these individuals can transform both our educational systems and our economy.”

The minister also stressed the need for collaboration among educational institutions, industries, and government to transition disabled students to meaningful employment.
