The 2023 African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has been arrested on Sunday morning at Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos. He was however released after interrogations by operatives of a security agency, according to reports.
Sowore’s flight from Washington Dulles landed at 9:43 WAT, after departing at 6:14 EDT.
A leaked DSS memo dated September 12, 2024, had revealed plans to detain Sowore upon his return.
On X, Sowore shared that his passport was seized by Nigerian Immigration, and he was informed of his detention orders. “I had just arrived in Nigeria from the USA at MMIA in Lagos; upon reaching Nigerian Immigration, my passport was seized, and they told me they had orders to detain me,” Sowore posted.
He described the arrest as part of a broader crackdown by the current administration, which he claims fears the upcoming #FearlessINOctober protest.
