At least 281 inmates have been reported missing from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed on Sunday.
The flooding, which has affected various parts of Maiduguri, caused significant damage to the custodial facility and staff quarters.
In a statement, the NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar explained, “The flooding has brought down the walls of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, leading to the evacuation of inmates.”
He added, “Upon this evacuation, 281 inmates were observed to be missing. However, we have detailed records, including biometrics, of the missing individuals.”
Efforts are underway to locate the missing inmates. Abubakar noted, “We are working in synergy with other security agencies, with both covert and overt operations activated to track down the escapees. “To date, seven inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody.
The NCoS assured the public that these incidents do not compromise public safety.
The flood, resulting from the rupture of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River due to heavy rains, has impacted over 23,000 household, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)
The United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and NEMA have reported that this is the town’s worst flooding in 30 years.
Abubakar further reassured, “Our officers are working around the clock to manage the situation, ensure public safety, and facilitate the secure transfer of inmates.”
