In response to the recent surge in mpox cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners have introduced an Access and Allocation Mechanism (AAM) for distributing mpox medical countermeasures
In a statement published on the organisation’s website on Friday, this new system aims to ensure fair and effective allocation of vaccines, treatments, and diagnostic tests, particularly to those at highest risk.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics are powerful tools for controlling mpox outbreaks in Africa.”
He noted that international coordination, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, is crucial for equitable access to these tools.
The AAM is part of the interim Medical Countermeasures Network (i-MCM-Net), a global partnership involving UN agencies, health organisations, civil society, and the private sector.
The network aims to manage the development, production, and distribution of medical countermeasures while negotiations for a permanent pandemic agreement continue.
The mechanism has already secured over 3.6 million doses of vaccines. Notably, Japan has pledged 3 million doses of the LC16 vaccine, the largest single pledge. Other contributions include 620,000 doses of the MVA-BN vaccine from several European countries and the United States.
The Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, Dr. Mike Ryan, stressed that the AAM will support countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo with an integrated approach to case detection, vaccination, and care. “The AAM will ensure a reliable supply of vaccines and tools crucial for interrupting transmission and reducing suffering,” he said.
