FG to Set Up Blood Collection Centres Nationwide

The federal government has announced its plans to establish Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas, including the FCT.

In a statement dated 7th September, 2024 issued by the head of Media and Publicity at the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Abdullahi Haruna, this aimed to ensure a steady supply of blood during medical emergencies and transfusions.

Mr Haruna in the statement quoted Saleh Yuguda, the NBSA director-general, who emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing blood shortages. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that blood needs are adequately addressed,” Yuguda said. “This initiative is a significant step toward achieving that goal.”

The NBSA has partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to establish a blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility.

Yuguda explained that this collaboration aims to support both medical emergencies and sister security agencies. “This partnership will help mitigate blood shortages and provide critical support,” he added.

To kick off the project, the FCT will host strategically placed blood collection facilities. “This move is expected to boost blood donation rates and ensure a steady supply for medical purposes,” Yuguda said.

Deputy Commandant Emeka Okeke of the NSCDC remarked, “This initiative will play a vital role in addressing blood shortages and saving lives.”
