Nigerian Students Set for Nationwide Strike over Fuel Price Increase

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a nationwide strike starting September 15, 2024, to protest the recent increase in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The NNPCL raised the price from N617 to N897 per litre on September 3.

In a statement sent to Africa Health Report on Wednesday, titled “Fuel Price Hike: A Threat to Our Future,”,

the NANS National Senate President, Henry Okunomo criticised this as an “egregious act” and demanded an immediate reversal of the price hike.

NANS has urged students, civil society groups, and the general public to join their peaceful demonstration, aiming to push for fairer treatment of Nigerian students and citizens.

The group has also condemned NNPCL’s leader, Mele Kyari, for “gross incompetence,” calling for his removal. They accuse the NNPC of inefficiency and failing the Nigerian people.
