The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced a four-week suspension of its strike to facilitate dialogue with the state government.
The decision, reached after an emergency general meeting, aims to address the public hardship caused by the ongoing strike which has impacted state-owned healthcare facilities.
Dr. OgunJimi Luqman, the chairman of the association, explained that the meeting on August 27, 2024, was critical for assessing the situation. “The congress reconvened on August 29, 2024, to review the strike’s progress, evaluate engagements with the Ogun State government, and decide on the next steps,” Luqman stated.
The NMA’s strike, which has lasted 25 days, was driven by demands for wage parity between Ogun State healthcare workers and their federal counterparts, as well as improved overall member welfare.
The association contends that the Ogun State government has not yet implemented the revised CONMESS wage structure that has been in effect for federal institutions since June 2023.
Despite efforts by NMA executives, the issue remains unresolved. The association has urged the Ogun State government to address their demands during this four-week suspension to avoid further disruptions. “We acknowledge the difficulties faced by the people of Ogun State and hope the government will act promptly,” Luqman added.
The NMA plans to review the situation on September 30, 2024, and warns that continued industrial action is possible if demands remain unmet.
