The Federal Government, through the Bureau of Public Enterprises and distribution companies has signed a major contract to supply and install 1.4 million smart meters across Nigeria, addressing a significant metering deficit.
The agreement was finalised with Ningbo Sanxing Medical & Electric Company Limited, Ningbo Sanxing Smart Electric Company Limited, and XJ Group Corporation. This contract involves the provision of 1,437,500 meters nationwide.
Executive Director, Transmission Service Provider, Ajiboye Oluwagbenga, in a statement by the Company on Friday described the project as a pivotal move towards addressing Nigeria’s 7.1-million-meter shortage. “This project is a crucial step in bridging the meter gap,” he stated.
The statement posted on its X handle disclosed that, “The project is part of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme funded by the World Bank’s $500m facility through the Investment Project Finance arrangement.”
He added that any customer who gets the meter for free will pay the cost in 10 years.
This programme aims to improve Nigeria’s metering infrastructure and reduce reliance on estimated billing.
