The Police Command of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has arrested Abdul Rasheed Muhammad, a personnel of the Nigerian Navy, for his involvement in the murder of Aminu Ibrahim, the son of retired Vice Admiral I. I. Ibrahim, a former Chief of Naval Staff.
The FCT police command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, reported that the arrest took place on August 23 during a standard stop-and-search operation. The individual was stopped while driving a black Prado SUV and, when questioned, could not satisfactorily explain how he acquired the vehicle.
“Police operatives apprehended him, and initial investigations indicated that the suspect is a member of the Nigerian Navy serving guard duty at the home of a retired naval officer. The vehicle in question was owned by the late Aminu Ibrahim, who was murdered and had his Prado SUV stolen on August 18, 2024, at River Benue Street in Maitama,” Adeh reported.
While in custody, the suspect reportedly tried to flee but was quickly recaptured. In the course of questioning, he admitted to being a member of a three-man gang that focused on armed robbery and stealing luxury cars, which they sold outside the FCT. He also revealed that they had completed three successful operations so far.
In his statement, the suspect explained, “I work at the house. He wanted to go out around 11:30 at night and asked for security, so I accompanied him with my gun. During the trip, he paused to check his ATM, leading me to believe he was going to make a purchase. I thought I was just escorting him to a market or another location. Then, as I exited through a different door, I shot him, took his car, and left. I’m a guard and a seaman in the Navy. He hadn’t done anything to me; I killed him to steal his car.”
The police are currently ramping up their attempts to capture the remaining gang members who are still on the run.
