A group of concerned Nigerian citizens, led by the Nigeria Citizens’ Watch for Good Governance, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to investigate allegations of toxic fuel importation in the country.
The group claims that the importation of substandard petroleum products violates the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and poses a significant risk to the health and well-being of Nigerians.
The National President of the group, Eshiofeh Collins, stated that the use of low-quality fuel can damage vehicle engines and exacerbate poverty.
They said they are demanding an immediate investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and other relevant agencies into these harmful practices. Any individual found guilty of importing substandard fuel must face legal consequences.
If the authorities failed to act within the seven-day ultimatum, which expires on Thursday, the group threatened to mobilize Nigerians to peacefully occupy filling stations and jetties nationwide.
The warned that the continued importation of toxic fuel has severe consequences, including economic sabotage, environmental damage, and alarming health risks, such as respiratory diseases and reduced life expectancy, particularly in the Niger Delta region.
“These actions have severe consequences, including economic sabotage and significant environmental damage.
“The health risks are also alarming, with potential respiratory diseases and reduced life expectancy, particularly in the Niger Delta region.
“We issue a seven-day ultimatum, expiring on Thursday, for authorities to address these issues. Failure to act will compel us to mobilize Nigerians to peacefully occupy filling stations and jetties nationwide.”, the group stated
