UPDATED: NLC Seeks Time Extension for Police Invitation Compliance, Threatens Nationwide Shutdown

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has agreed to comply with a police invitation for its president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, but requested an extension due to the nature of the summons.

This decision came from an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Africa Health Report AHR, had informed earlier that the NLC held a crucial meeting in Abuja, following the Ajareo’s probe by the police.

“The NLC’s compliance should not be misconstrued as legitimizing the unfounded allegations against Comrade Ajaero,” the Congress stated.

It also warned that any harm to President Ajaero or other leaders would prompt an indefinite nationwide strike, effective midnight

Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy NLC President, Comrade Ado Sani Minjibir denounced what he described as ongoing harassment of the NLC leadership and labour leaders.

He accused the authorities of attempting to destabilise the labour movement, which traditionally supports democratic principles and represents the Nigerian populace.

The NEC issued a stern warning against what it termed a “witch-hunt” by the state, demanding an immediate halt to the harassment of its leaders.

The Congress pledged to take necessary actions, including mass protests and industrial actions, to safeguard the labour movement’s integrity.

“The Congress urged its affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members and called on civil society and the general public to support the NLC. “We stand resolute in defending workers’ rights and democratic values,” the NLC asserted. “We will not be intimidated by attempts to silence us. Our commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law remains unwavering.”
