Contradicting the Nigerian Army’s initial statement, Malam Mohammed, father of Ismail Mohammed, asserts that his 19-year-old son was killed inside their home in Samaru, Kaduna, on Tuesday.
Initially, the Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, reported that Mohammed was struck by a warning shot fired by a soldier amidst chaos involving hoodlums burning tires and attacking security personnel.
“A soldier fired a warning shot, which tragically struck Mohammed,” Nwachukwu explained.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has sent a delegation led by Maj Gen Lander Saraso to offer condolences to the family. The soldier involved has been arrested and is under investigation. Mohammed was buried according to Islamic rites, with senior military officials present.
However, Malam Mohammed insists his son was not outside when the shooting began, maintaining that the soldiers followed his son to the house and shot through the door, killing him. “My son was inside the house, having ran from the initial shots,” he said. “I learned of the incident through a call while I was at Hayin Dogo and could only reach home an hour later.”
His narrative raises concerns about the truthfulness of the Army’s account and the circumstances leading to Mohammed’s death.
