The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a one-month ultimatum for tertiary institutions to disclose illegal admissions.
Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, the JAMB spokesperson Dr. Fabian Benjamin, emphasised that institutions must reveal all unauthorized admissions from before 2017 by September 1, 2024.
Benjamin explained that the previous “Condonement of Illegal Admissions without Registration Number” policy, designed to manage unofficial admissions before 2017, has been misused. “This window has been abused, with some institutions colluding to falsify records and facilitate illegal admissions,” he said.
JAMB’s move aims to curb fraudulent practices, including falsified entry dates and age adjustments, which compromise the integrity of the admissions process and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
Benjamin noted that the integrity of the education system is at stake due to these malpractices.
He also clarified the minimum age requirement for the 2024/2025 academic session. Stating, “Candidates must be at least sixteen years old at the time of admission,” he said. “This policy aligns with the directive from the 2024 tertiary admission policy meeting, reinforcing the 6-3-3-4 educational structure from 2025.
Institutions failing to disclose illegal admissions within the specified period will face non-recognition of such admissions. JAMB urges all institutions to comply with this directive to ensure transparency and fairness in the admissions process.
