The Nigerian Federal Government has issued a statement urging Vice-Chancellors of all Nigerian universities to take urgent action to ensure the safety and security of staff, students, and university property in light of proposed nationwide protests.
In a statement signed by the Acting Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC),
Chris Maiyaki on Monday, stated that the government recognizes the right to peaceful protest but is concerned about potential risks to the university community.
The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman has directed Vice-Chancellors to implement proactive measures to protect the university community and to issue specific statements reassuring staff and students of their safety.
“To minimize potential dangers, it is advised that students remain on campus and focus on their academic pursuits during the planned protests.”
