The Ogun State Police Command has arrested 27-year-old man, Damilola Orelaja, and taken him into custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the Omu Ijebu area of the state.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest, the suspect is being held for interrogation and further investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect, allegedly enticed the 14-year-old victim into his residence on Araromi Street, Ọmu-Ijebu, around 8:00 pm on July 22, 2024, as the victim was returning from running errands.
The victim’s father who was simply identified as Mr. Wasiu, swiftly alerted the police about the incident, leading to an immediate response from the Omu division officers.
“The suspect was immediately arrested when the matter was brought to our attention on July 23. He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution,” Odutola stated.
A separate recent allegation also surfaced in Lagos where a police officer was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl inside a police station. The incident reportedly occurred when the teenager visited the station to file a report about her missing phone.
In response to the escalating rates of gender-based violence, civil society groups are frantically demanding swift justice for survivors and advocating for a community-led approach to tackle the root causes of the issue and prevent future occurrences.
