The National Assembly is taking steps to bolster the regulatory function of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with the introduction of a new bill.
According to Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Corporate Communications Unit at NIMC, the proposed legislation aims to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of the Identity Management System.
Adegoke stated, “The NIMC Bill represents a significant legislative endeavour to enhance the efficacy and inclusivity of the Identity Management System.” The bill includes amendments that expand the scope of registrable persons, leading to a more comprehensive and inclusive identification system.”
This move is expected to improve national security, service delivery efficiency, and financial inclusion.
The bill focuses on strengthening data protection measures to safeguard individuals’ privacy and confidentiality. It also grants NIMC enhanced administrative enforcement powers to ensure compliance with ID registration requirements.
According to Adegoke, once the NIMC repeal and enactment bill becomes law, it is anticipated to streamline the registration process, reduce bureaucratic obstacles, and enhance the reliability of the Nigeria ID System.
He emphasised that these changes will contribute to a more efficient and secure identity management system in the country.
