A recent survey conducted by the Africa Polling Institute has uncovered a stark reality for Nigerians under President Tinubu’s administration – hunger reigns as the most pressing challenge faced by citizens.
Titled “Biggest Challenge Nigerians are facing Under Tinubu’s presidency,” the poll gathered insights from a diverse group of individuals nationwide, painting a troubling picture of food insecurity in the country.
A staggering 36% of respondents highlighted hunger as their primary concern, reflecting the dire circumstances many Nigerians find themselves in.
In a close second, 38% cited the inability to meet basic needs, underscoring the pervasive issue of poverty and lack of essential resources.
The survey also pointed out other critical challenges, with unemployment at 13%, heightened insecurity at 9%, and electricity outages at 9%.
In response to these findings, Mr. Tunde from Abuja expressed his dismay, stating, “Hunger has become a constant companion for many Nigerians. It is disheartening to see our leaders not taking necessary steps to alleviate this suffering.”
Similarly, Ms. Simbiyat emphasized the need for urgent action, highlighting the importance of job creation and opportunities for the youth. She remarked, “Unemployment is a major problem in our country today. We need policies that will create jobs and provide opportunities for the youth.”
According to the 2023 Global Hunger Index, (GHI), Nigeria was ranked 109th out of 125 countries, with a score of 28.3 per cent, where countries that scored 20.0 to 34.9 have serious hunger. It means that Nigeria is the 16th most hungry country in the world amongst countries with sufficient data to calculate the 2023 GHI scores.
These poll results serve as a stark reminder of the challenges plaguing Nigerians and the critical need for President Tinubu to address these pressing issues promptly.
