President Bola Tinubu has made a significant move in the healthcare sector by appointing Professor John Obafunwa as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
Taking over from Professor Babatunde Salako, whose tenure expires on July 23, 2024, Professor Obafunwa’s appointment, effective July 24, 2024, marks a new chapter for the institute.
Describing Professor Obafunwa’s qualifications, in a statement by Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday, it highlighted his extensive academic background and professional experience.
The President expressed gratitude to Professor Salako for his service, setting high expectations for the incoming Director-General.
Professor Obafunwa’s impressive career trajectory includes specialisation in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology, with notable roles in the UK, Cayman Islands, and Bermuda.
His research contributions in anatomic and forensic pathology, including work in forensic entomology and taphonomy, demonstrate his commitment to advancing medical science.
The President emphasised the importance of leveraging Professor Obafunwa’s expertise to drive NIMR’s research objectives and enhance public health initiatives in Nigeria.
