Lagos Tops Lists of Cities with Worst Traffic in Africa

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital city, has been ranked as the most congested traffic systems in Africa. This is contained in a new report by Numbeo who carried out the report.

Numbeo is an international organization that provides information on the socio-economic factors across different cities and countries around the world.

The traffic index assesses commute time, dissatisfaction with traffic, CO2 emissions, and overall system inefficiencies to highlight the severity of the issue. The city’s roads are often gridlocked, with vehicles crawling at a snail’s pace, horns blaring, and frustrated drivers honking in despair.

The sheer volume of cars, buses, and motorcycles, combined with inadequate infrastructure, poor road maintenance, and a lack of effective traffic management, has created a transportation nightmare that leaves commuters stranded for hours, wasting precious time and fuel.

The severity of Lagos’ traffic congestion has earned it the unenviable reputation as one of the most traffic-clogged cities on the continent, with some estimates suggesting that residents spend an average of three hours daily stuck in traffic.

As populations grow exponentially and more people seek economic opportunities in cities like Lagos, the surge in traffic will overstretch infrastructure development, causing chaotic rural-urban migration, reduced quality of life, and lower economic productivity.

Here is a list of top 5 cities with the worst traffic in Africa

  1. Lagos (Nigeria)
  2. Nairobi (Kenya)
  3. Cairo (Egypt)
  4. Pretoria (South Africa)
  5. Cape Town (South Africa)
