The Nigerian Supreme Court has declared unconstitutional the practice of state governors holding funds allocated for local government administrations.
This decision returns power to the 774 local government councils to independently manage their finances.
In a phone interview with Africa Health Report, (AHR), on Thursday, Mr. Ibrahim Achi, a development economics lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, praised the ruling, stating, “This judgment is a step in the right direction towards decentralization and good governance. It will promote accountability and ensure that funds meant for local communities are utilized effectively.”
He added, “Empowering local government administrations to manage their own funds will enable them to better serve their communities and address pressing developmental needs at the grassroots level.”
Achi acknowledged potential challenges, noting, “Some governors may resist relinquishing control over these funds initially. However, this ruling is a victory for democracy and will ultimately strengthen our federal structure.”
He concluded optimistically, saying, “We hope that this judgment will inspire further reforms to enhance transparency, accountability, and participatory governance at all levels.”
