FG Approves 150-day Duty-free Importation of Maize, Rice, Wheat, Others

President Bola Tinubu has suspended the payment of duties, tariffs and taxes on some food items that are imported to the country through land and sea borders.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Alhaji Abubakar Kyari made the disclosure in a press statement as part of the implementation of the Presidential Accelerated and Stabilisation Advancement Plan (ASAP).

The major food items include maize, husk brown rice and wheat, to cushion the impact of the high food prices Nigerians have been grappling with since the present administration came on board a year ago.

According to the statement, the federal government hopes to quell the food security problem in the next 180 days through the granting of 150 days import window for certain food commodities, while the federal government will import 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and maize to fill the depleted strategic grain reserve.

The Minister of Agriculture also revealed that the Ministry in the next 14 days will collaborate Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit and the Economic Management Team (EMT) to finalise the implementation frame work for the policy initiatives.
