NUC Laments Decline in Quality of University Lectures

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has expressed concern over the decline in the quality of Ceremonies and Special Lectures in Nigerian universities.

Executive Secretary, NUC, Mr Chris Maiyaki disclosed this during a retreat for governing council members in Abuja.

He noted that these traditional occasions have lost their previous prestige due to the adoption of unsuitable practices.

In response, the NUC has resolved to establish minimum guidelines for the conduct of university ceremonies.

He said, “Good governance is at the heart of the success of all organisations in the world over. It is, particularly, important in higher education because a university is, in many ways, a far more complicated organisation than an ordinary institution. Governance in higher education requires an appropriate framework for accommodating a diverse group of stakeholders. Indeed, good governance informs and facilitates decision-making which, in turn, enables a university to grow and prosper,” he said.

He also stressed the need for council members to have extensive knowledge of the issues faced by their institutions.

The retreat aims to provide insights into the legal and regulatory requirements of governing councils. Maiyaki expressed hope that it will help position universities for greater effectiveness.
