A fire incident occurred at the effluent treatment plant of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos on Wednesday but was swiftly extinguished by firefighters and first responders, according to the company.
Viral videos on social media captured thick plumes of smoke billowing from the facility located at the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos.
Despite the incident, operations at the refinery were not affected, as confirmed by company spokesman, Anthony Chiejina.
He said, “There is no cause for alarm as the refinery is operating and there is no recorded injury or body harm to all our staff on duty.”
The $20 billion facility, owned by billionaire businessman Alhaji Aliko Dangote, began operations last December with a capacity of 350,000 barrels per day, aiming to reach 650,000 barrels per day by year-end.
The refinery has already started supplying diesel and aviation fuel to marketers in the country, with petrol supply expected to commence in mid-July.
