A fertility expert, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, has warned that undergoing fibroid treatment or surgery does not guarantee fertility and is primarily for symptom relief.
Speaking at the Nordica Fibroid Care Centre in Abuja, Dr. Ajayi clarified that there is a common misconception that removing fibroids will automatically lead to pregnancy, but this is not always the case.
He stated that male factors and blocked fallopian tubes can also be causes of infertility, which cannot be resolved by fibroid treatment.
Ajayi further highlighted the success of the High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for uterine fibroids, which will be introduced in the facility in Abuja on July 1.
He mentioned that the method has already been successfully implemented in Lagos, where 475 patients have undergone the treatment.
According to research, over 70 per cent of women below 50 years are susceptible to developing fibroids, which can have significant health implications.
Ajayi emphasized the importance of finding alternative methods of symptom relief without resorting to surgery. He said, “We have been able to introduce a method of symptom relief without surgery, and that is what HIFU does.”.
