Exclusive: Over 5.8 million Sokoto Residents Multidimentionally Poor-Report

No fewer than 5.8 million people in Sokoto state in North-west Nigeria, are poor and finding it difficult to feed due to economic hardship, a report obtained by Africa Health Report (AHR), has revealed.

According to the report by Multidimensionally Poverty Index (MPI), Sokoto is among the poorest states, “and with 5.8 million poor people among its population of 6.4 million, it faces very significant

Challenges”, said MPI.

There is fear that this figure might have increased over the past one year, based on significant increase in prices of food, occasioned by food shortage.

More people across Nigeria states are struggling daily to find foods. More Nigerians are pushed into the extreme poverty level, our recent findings have revealed.

The challenges are being compounded by heightened insecurity perpetrated by terrorists operating in the axis, which has affected agricultural produce, as farmers have abandoned their farms, fleeing for their safety.

Further findings by AHR show that the situation has generated concerns with many, including a former Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari making a case for increased farming and food production to address the widespread hunger in the country.
