WHO Urges Innovative Solutions to Mental Health Crisis in Children, Adolescents

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the need for Innovative approaches to tackle the prevalence of mental health mental challenges amongst children and adolescents.

This was confirmed by the WHO Non Communicable Disease (NCD) department official X platform on Tuesday in its creation of NCD lab which aims at submission of Innovative Solutions and  introducing mental health counseling in primary health care center across the globe.

Following a report from Africa Health Report (AHR)  on the Child’s Mental Health Crisis, Dr. Oluyemi Ogun in an interview confirms most children suffer from mental health issues as a result of environmental, genetic and biological factors which originate from parenting style, poverty, trauma and brain injury.

According to the United Nation International Children Emergency Funds (UNICEF), 1 in 6 young Nigerians aged 15- 24 often feel depressed or have little interest in doing things, more than 1 in 7 adolescents aged 10- 19 is estimated to live with diagnosed mental health problems globally and this underscores with 46,000 adolescents who die from suicide each year globally and mental health problems is among the top five causes of their death.
