The Presidential flag bearer for the Labour Party, Peter Obi has criticised the Federal Government for considering purchasing new aircraft for the Presidential fleet.
This comes after the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence recommended buying new planes for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
Obi on his X handle on Monday described the move as “unacceptable” and a “clear show of insensitivity to the suffering of the Nigerian people.”
He expressed disappointment that, amidst an economic crisis with hyperinflation, a falling currency, and widespread poverty, the government is thinking about acquiring new jets.
“This demonstrates extreme insensitivity to citizens’ struggles,” Obi stated.
He emphasised that the country is facing significant challenges, including rising insecurity, poverty, hunger, and homelessness, and resources should be prioritised for the welfare of the people.
Obi also pointed out that the current presidential jets have an average age of 12 years and were purchased when most Nigerians could afford necessities.
He urged the government to focus on alleviating the suffering of the citizens and finding solutions to their problems instead of adding to luxury expenses.
“It is time to stop this impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness and refocus on the needs of our people,” Obi declared.
He called for a prioritisation of education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, and emphasised the importance of building a nation that serves all its people, rather than just a few interests.
