Murtala Mohammed Expressway Name Unchanged, FG Clarifies

The Federal Government has officially denied rumors regarding the renaming of the Murtala Mohammed Expressway. Contrary to circulating reports, the administration has confirmed that the expressway in Abuja has not been renamed Wole Soyinka Way.

In a statement released to Africa Health Report (AHR) on Monday, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, clarified: “The renaming of the Murtala Mohammed Expressway has never been contemplated by this administration.”

The statement continued, recently President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the Federal Capital Territory, codenamed Arterial Road N20, which runs from Katampe to Jahi. This road links the existing Outer Northern Expressway (Murtala Mohammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (Ahmadu Bello Way).

“During the inauguration, FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike proposed naming the new Arterial Road N20 after Prof. Wole Soyinka, to which the President agreed.”

Therefore, it is the Arterial Road N20 that is named after Prof. Soyinka, while the Murtala Mohammed Expressway remains unchanged and continues to honor the former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed.

The government urges citizens to disregard any misinformation regarding the renaming, emphasizing that such reports are entirely false and only exist in the imagination of their purveyors.
