Ministry of Defence Civilians Staff Protest Killings by Military Personnel

Ahead of democracy Day, Wednesday, June12, the civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence under the umbrella of the Joint Executive Council have demonstrated against what they called extrajudicial killings of civilians by military personnel.

The protest was held outside the National Defence Center, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Our reporter spoke with the angry protesters who were seen bearing placards with inscriptions such as “The Civilians Are Not Slaves to the soldiers”.

One of the protesters, Mr. Wale who spoke explained that the gathering was in protest against the extrajudicial brutality of civilians by military personnel with the most recent case being the death of Mr Richard Onumegbu, a lab technician at the Nigerian  Navy Reference Hospital in Lagos.

Onumegbu was beaten to death on March 26 by naval officers over a squabble with a lady who was relentless abusing the deceased and when confronted, she called the officers who brutally attacked him resulting in his death after four days on Easter Sunday, March 31.
