As the federal government of Nigeria celebrated its one year anniversary of coming to power, May 29, President Bola Tinubu had spent 83 days outside the country, attending to matters not unconnected to his health, among others, Africa Health Report, (AHR) can reveal.
Further revelation is that business and private engagements dominated Tinubu’s foreign trips over the past one year.
Checks by AHR on Thursday show that out of the 366 days that the president had to tackle the mountain of challenges facing the country since he ascended the Aso Rock Seat of Power, he engaged in foreign trips for 83 days.
Prominent among the problems confronting his government, and which required immediate actionable decisions are the weak naira, insecurity, food inflation, minimum wage for government workers, and high living cost occasioned by his removal of fuel subsidy.
AHR can recall that the aforementioned issues have sparked intense outcries with tongues wagged over Mr president’s absence from Nigeria.
In the same vein, tongues wagged over speculations about Mr president’s travels on grounds of his health in the guise of international conferences while the country’s health sector remained poor in infrastructure. But Tinubu’s media handlers had dismissed the reports and said the president went in the interest of Nigeria-to woo investors.
However, as AHR findings reveal from the painstaking Report by Statisense, a data research organization based in Nigeria, Tinubu’s abroad itinerary included engagements with heads of states and governments.
With the least numbers of days showing zero, the highest days he spent overseas in a single travel was 12, according to Statisense. The countries he travelled most were France and the UK.
Meanwhile, Tinubu had announced plans to checkmate medical tourism involving his officials.
But, AHR investigation shows that some officers in the government still travel abroad for medicals despite the presidential ban.
Details of BAT’s travels as obtained by Africa Health Report show as follows:
