Chairman Malam Jalal Arabi, has urged pilgrims embarking on the 2024 Hajj to remember the sacred purpose of their journey.
Arabi, in a statement signed by NAHCON’s Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Hajia Fatima Sanda Usara, and released to Africa Health Report (AHR) on Thursday, advised pilgrims to be vigilant about being unknowingly involved in illegal trading.
He emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s strict laws against drug trafficking carry the death penalty for offenders.
“NAHCON wishes to remind the pilgrims that the purpose of their trip to Saudi Arabia is for worship, therefore they should not be distracted by acts that would violate the sanctity of their Hajj,” the statement read.
Arabi highlighted the importance of spiritual reflection and respect for Saudi laws and customs during Hajj. He warned pilgrims to be vigilant with their luggage at airports to avoid the implantation of prohibited items.
“Pilgrims are urged to uphold their honour and dignity and that of the country, as any individual caught smuggling prohibited items not only brings shame upon themselves but also tarnishes the reputation of their nation,” he added.
NAHCON also advised State Pilgrims Welfare Boards (SPWBs) to work closely with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other agencies to prevent smuggling, thereby avoiding embarrassment and delays during screenings.
The Commission noted ongoing challenges with the discovery of kolanuts in pilgrims’ luggage and the misplacement of passports, urging adherence to Saudi regulations to ensure smooth operations.
Laraban Abdullahi, Head of NAHCON’s National Reception Team, reiterated the importance of compliance with the ban on kolanuts, which has been in effect since 2016.
