The National Bereau Statistics (NBS) has shown in its latest report that the cost of a healthy diet is now at 5.4% per day. That is, N1,035 in April which was N982 in the previous month.
This is contained in its Cost of Healthy Diet Report (CoHD) in April 2024.
“The National average Cost of a Healthy Diet was N1,035 in April 2024. This is 5.4% higher than the amount recorded in the previous month (March 2024, was N982).
In April 2024, the average CoHD was highest in the South West at N1,406 per adult per day, compared to N781 per adult per day in the North West” the report partly reads.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy diet is a form of diet that protects one from malnutrition as well as non-communicable diseases (NCDs), diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Further, it’s advisable to take total fat of 30% per day, saturated fat should be less than 10%, tran-fat should be less than 1% , sugar should be limited to 10%, salt in take should be less than 5g per day which is equivalent to an take of 2g sodium a day because it helps to prevent hypertension and reduce risk of heart diseases and stroke in adults.
