NAFDAC Shuts Down Illegal Alcohol Manufacturing Operation in Lagos, Vows Prosecution

In a press release dated May 12, 2024, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to the production of adulterated products.

This call to action comes in the wake of the agency’s successful dismantling of an illegal alcohol manufacturing syndicate in the Badagry area of Lagos State.

According to the press release, NAFDAC, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army’s 15 Field Engineering Regiment, intervened to shut down the operations of Mr. Chinedu Okafor, an illegal alcohol manufacturer Okafor was operating his illicit factory from his residence located at No. 24, MTN Road, Badagry.

The agency’s swift action, aided by intelligence from the Nigerian Army, resulted in the arrest of Okafor and the seizure of equipment and materials used in the production of fake alcoholic beverages.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of public vigilance in safeguarding public health. She stated, “NAFDAC will continue to ensure that the level of counterfeit products nationwide is brought to the nearest minimum so that our people will continue to consume only healthy and safe products.”

Okafor will face prosecution for his involvement in the illegal manufacturing of alcohol, with offending products valued at over fifty million naira (₦50,000,000) set to be destroyed.

The agency also highlighted the dangers of consuming adulterated alcohol, which can lead to severe health complications, including kidney and liver failure, and even death.

Furthermore, NAFDAC advised consumers to scrutinize branded drinks before consumption, recommending the “4 Ps” approach: Place, Price, Packaging, and Product. Consumers are urged to purchase NAFDAC-registered drinks from reputable and licensed retailers, check for abnormal pricing, inspect packaging for signs of tampering, and beware of unusual odors.

In light of the global health risks associated with adulterated alcohol consumption, NAFDAC remains committed to combating the production and distribution of counterfeit products to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
