UNIBEN Lecturers to Boycott April 28 Resumption over Insecurity, Violent Attacks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Benin, Edo State, has announced its decision to boycott the planned resumption of academic activities on April 28 due to concerns over security.

In a statement released by the UNIBEN ASUU Chairman, Ray Chikogu, and Secretary, Success Abusomwan, On Monday, they expressed apprehension over the safety of their members, citing recent incidents of violence targeting lecturers.

The decision comes in the wake of the attempted murder of Dr. Presley Osemwengie, a lecturer in the Department of Economics, who was attacked during an event on April 12.

Dr. Osemwengie was reportedly hit in the head with a small axe by individuals associated with the University of Benin Students Union, raising fears among ASUU members about their safety on campus.
