The Federal Government has approved the upgrade of the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kebbi to a teaching hospital.
The announcement was made by Jamilu Magaji, spokesperson of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, on Friday when he revealed that the facility would now serve as a training ground for medical students from the College of Health Sciences at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.
According to Magaji, the approval for the upgrade came in the form of a letter from the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Tunji Alausa, dated March 23, 2024. He emphasized that this move underscores the government’s commitment to providing top-notch healthcare services at reasonable costs and addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals.
“This letter is a testament to the passion and commitment of President Bola Tinubu aimed at ensuring that Nigerians get the best healthcare at an affordable cost and to increase the much-needed human resources for health.” He said.
The Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, is set to collaborate closely with the management of the Federal Medical Centre to facilitate a seamless transition to a teaching hospital. Vice Chancellor Muhammad Zaiyan-Umar affirmed the university’s dedication to ensuring the smooth establishment of the teaching hospital for the benefit of both students and the people of Kebbi.
