Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has allocated ₦1 billion for the training of teachers in all 27 local government areas of the state.
Zulum announced during the inauguration of 27 educational secretaries for the local government education authorities on Tuesday, adding that the training program would cater to 1,000 teachers with ‘O’ levels and individuals without certificates but with relevant experience.
The secretaries were chosen after a review in 2019 of the state government’s mandatory education law from 2005. This law permits the political selection of education secretaries who hold the rank and benefits of a permanent secretary.
This follows the governor’s decision to suspend the verification of teachers two months ago.
Prior to officially commencing the teachers’ training session, Zulum affirmed his commitment to prioritizing the education sector. He highlighted the significant progress made in reducing the number of out-of-school children from two million to 800,000 over the last five years.
