Following the drastic disruption of internet services in Africa, Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) has called for a shared and cooperative approach to protect telecommunication structures to ensure continuous internet connectivity.
This was confirmed by the Executive Chairman of NCC Dr. Aminu Maida in a statement delivered in Annual General Meeting (AGM) of West Africa Telecommunication Regulatory Assembly (WATRA) held in Sierra Leon.
Reacting to this, the Chief Executive of West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOO), Mr Chris Wood in Virtual Conference on Monday said that Nigeria should focus more on getting more cable since the interference of the cable by humans is zero percent and having more operators connect to every cable is best resilience to tackle future internet disruptions.
“What Nigeria and other West African countries need are more cables landing at the shores of the country that will lead to huge redundancy. The idea of physical security may not work because the cables are laid on the bed of the sea and no one can see exactly their locations to warrant physical protection. So having more cables is the best security measure and not physical security,” Wood said.
