The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the partnership with the British Council aimed at enhancing the curriculum and pedagogical approaches in Nigerian universities.
This collaboration was made known on Monday by the Acting Executive Secretary, NUC, Chris Maiyaki, during his keynote address at a two-day Workshop on Enhancing Curriculum and Pedagogical Approaches in Nigerian Universities in Abuja.
Maiyaki emphasised the significance of this partnership, stating, “This workshop is a testament to the excellent relationship with Foster over the years to continuously attune the Nigerian university system to provide the requisite skills to implement new policies and paradigm shift and in this case, is a core curriculum, minimum academic standards, which is the flagship to signature innovation of the NUC to bring Nigerian universities to speak to put them on the wall map of contemporary curriculum.”
The Acting Country Director for the British Council, Chikodi Onyemerela, also expressed the need for curriculum modification to address contemporary needs, employability, entrepreneurship, and the demands of the industrial sector.
Onyemerela stressed the importance of equipping students with the right skills to compete globally, saying, “As I was saying in my speech, I was taught Fortran, COBOL, Pascal Basic and then when I come out, what I’m seeing is C -sharp, C++, SQL things around sophistication Python, so it’s important that curriculum, Pedagogica approaches are responding to the needs of the market and looking into the future.”
The workshop aims to equip academic staff with the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and deploy curriculum using innovative teaching strategies and technologies to enhance the student learning experience. It seeks to address the evolving needs of the job market and ensure that Nigerian universities are at the forefront of contemporary curriculum and pedagogical approaches.
