FG Plans Ban on Syringe Importation to Promote Local Industry Growth

The Minister of State for Health has called for a ban on the importation of medical syringes into the country in a bid to promote local production of medical grade syringe, boost the economy, and control the infiltration of substandard and Falsified medical equipment entering the country.

This decision was reached on Thursday when Alausa alongside other stakeholders including the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Mrs Amina Mohammed and others visited the Afrimedical Manufacturing and Supplies Limited Syringe factory in Ogun State where they noted the need to ban syringe imports to stimulate domestic manufacturing.

Alausa reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting local industries, particularly in the healthcare sector. The ban on syringe imports aims to encourage the production of high-quality syringes by Nigerian manufacturers, thereby generating employment opportunities and contributing to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In alignment with this initiative, NAFDAC has ceased granting import authorizations for syringes, redirecting its focus towards supporting local syringe manufacturers.

Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach involving multiple government agencies to address the issue of illicit medical device imports. She underscored the need for collaboration in implementing policies to safeguard domestic industries and enhance regulatory oversight at ports.

While acknowledging potential cost implications, Adeyeye expressed confidence that increased local production would ultimately lead to price reductions and export opportunities. She advocated for government support in reducing import tariffs on critical raw materials and equipment, facilitating the growth of local manufacturers.

Managing Director of Afrimedical, Akin Oyediran, affirmed the company’s readiness to not only meet Nigeria’s syringe demands but also cater to neighboring countries. He expressed gratitude for the government’s support in creating an enabling environment for local manufacturers to thrive.
