The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has welcomed the offer of support from the United Nations in the development of marine resources within Nigeria.
During a meeting with Mohamed Malick, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, the Minister affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing the ocean’s resources and highlighted the creation of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy as evidence of this commitment.
“We would be happy to partner with the UN in the area of research, development of technology, fishery, biodiversity, renewable energy, and other areas that make up the totality of the marine and blue economy ecosystem,” Oyetola stated.
The Minister acknowledged the importance of the United Nations’ focus on the efficient harnessing of marine resources, specifically through their definition of the Blue Economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and job creation while preserving the ecosystem.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to enhance the safety and security of its waters. He revealed that the country has experienced zero incidents of piracy for three years and expressed a commitment to sustain this achievement. However, he acknowledged the need to do more in terms of training seafarers.
Commenting on the meeting, Malick praised Nigeria for establishing the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry, viewing it as a positive indicator of the country’s commitment to environmental safety and economic development.
He emphasized the potential of deploying marine resources to reinvigorate Nigeria’s economy and create employment opportunities.
