Diphtheria Outbreak Claims Four Children, 28 Hospitalized in Kano

A devastating outbreak of Diphtheria has claimed the lives of four children in villages within Kano State.

The outbreak, which has affected Kwarkiya, Kuru, Kunya, and Minjibir Villages, has left an additional 28 children fighting for their lives.

The Information Officer of the local government, Tasiu Yahaya Dadin-Duniya, revealed the alarming figures in a statement released on Thursday.

Muhammad Yakubu Kunya, the Interim Management Officer of the local government, has urgently called on authorities and stakeholders to intervene swiftly.

In a plea for help, he stressed, “We need immediate assistance to combat this deadly disease and protect the lives of our children.”

To address the outbreak, the District Head in the local government has requested the assistance of traditional rulers and Islamic scholars to provide enlightenment and prayer for the affected communities.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and nose. It can cause severe breathing difficulties and even lead to death if left untreated. Vaccination programs have significantly reduced the incidence of diphtheria globally, but this recent outbreak highlights the ongoing need for immunisation and public health initiatives.
