Bill to Double Funding Basic Education Passes Second Reading in House of Representatives

A bill aiming to double funding for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has passed the second reading in the Nigerian House of Representatives. The amendment bill, sponsored by Muktar Shagaya, seeks to raise UBEC’s funding from 2 per cent to 4 per cent of the consolidated revenue fund.

During the committee’s oversight function at the Digital Resource Center built by UBEC in Abuja, on Thursday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Bako Useni, emphasised the importance of the increased funding. He stated, “We will continue to monitor the kind of training given to our teachers and ensure that funds are utilized for the betterment of Nigerians.”

The Digital Resource Center, showcased during the oversight visit, is a significant step towards introducing newer dimensions to Nigeria’s basic education sector.

Dr. Hameed Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, expressed his excitement about the center, which includes a digital museum, library, artificial intelligence center, studio, and micro-labs.

He explained that it would enhance teacher training, digital learning, and the development of education resources, ultimately transforming the basic education sub-sector.

Professor Bashir Galandanci, the National Coordinator of the Digital Resource Center, highlighted its potential to revolutionize education in Nigeria. He emphasised that the center will coordinate smart schools across the country and prepare teachers and administrators to effectively utilize digital resources.
