Minister Advises Varsity to Collaborate with NUC over Establishing Marine Engineering Dept

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has advised the Federal University of Lokoja to synergise with the National Universities Commission (NUC) for its plan to establish a Marine Engineering Department.

Oyetola said this when the institution’s Management Team, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja on Tuesday to seek support for its plan to establish a Marine Engineering Department.

In response to the university’s request, the Minister’s representative, Permanent Secretary Mr Olufemi Oloruntola, stated, “The request or wish to have a Department of Marine Engineering is definitely within your place and you in concert with the National University Commission (NUC) will do most of what is required to bring it to light.”

He also encouraged the university to approach NIWA directly and put forward propositions to deepen its mandate.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi emphasised the importance of the Marine Engineering Department, stating that it would equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address challenges and opportunities within the blue economy.

He also expressed the university’s desire to collaborate with NIWA in addressing complex issues such as flood management and related natural occurrences.
