The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Hamid Bobboyi, has called on the Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) to prioritize the implementation of Effective School Programmes (ESP) in a bid to enhance the quality of basic education across the country.
Speaking at the UVEB-SUBEBs meeting in Abuja, on Monday, Bobboyi emphasised that the ESP initiative aims to invest in improving learning conditions and processes, ultimately equipping students with essential life skills to thrive in the 21st-century knowledge economy.
Dr. Bobboyi highlighted the significance of reinventing mechanisms for improved inputs and processes in the implementation of UBE activities, emphasizing that this approach is crucial for achieving better outcomes.
He said under the ESP, the Commission aims to support SUBEBs in implementing minimum standards in all designated schools, including the distribution of instructional materials, installation of a satellite-based education system, and training of head teachers and teachers in effective schools. Stating, “It is envisaged that through this effort, we will create Centres of Excellence as we improve the inputs and processes deployed for teaching and learning in the schools.”
The Dean of Chairmen, SUBEB, Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, expressed optimism that the transformation of the e-learning programme into ESP would significantly enhance education outcomes for Nigerian students, potentially positioning Nigeria as a leader in literacy levels within Africa.
