Ramadan: Katsina to Feed 72,200 Residents Daily, Maps out N10b for Grains

Katsina State Government has announced plans to feed 72,200 vulnerable residents daily during the holy month of Ramadan.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda who revealed this during the inauguration of the state and local governments’ committees responsible for the distribution of grains to beneficiaries, said the government has allocated N10 billion for the purchase of grains, to feed 2,166,000 people throughout this year’s Ramadan.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Mohammed, Governor Radda stated, “Approximately 2.1 million residents will receive food assistance throughout the month of Ramadan.”

He also mentioned that the government has subsidised the prices of maize, millet, and guinea corn, selling these grains for N20,000 per bag to 400,000 households. This represents a significant reduction from the current market rates.

“To ensure fairness and equal access to the subsidised grains, the government has capped the purchase limit at 10 measures per buyer across the state.

“The local government committee has been directed to remit proceeds from grain sales to the state committee for deposit into government accounts to ensure accountability.

“The local committees will also be responsible for monitoring cooking points and overseeing grain distribution at the ward level. In addition to the 72,200 beneficiaries, 33,000 elderly and vulnerable families from across the state have been selected to receive free food items and cash donations to alleviate their suffering during the fasting period.”
